What to look for when buying smart lighting?
Colour
Most smart lighting systems have a huge range of whites and/or color shades. Some systems even allow you to link color shades to your entertainment system for the ultimate lighting experience. The colors are then adjusted depending on the image on your TV screen . Usually you can set color schemes or scenarios via an app that you can also rotate. The Color Rendering Index (CRI) indicates how correctly the colors are rendered. Smart bulbs form colors by combining RGB (red, yellow and blue). It is a good idea to choose a product with more than 70% CRI.
When choosing smart lighting, it is also very important to take into account the light range, which is expressed in lumens. 250 lumens is roughly comparable to a classic 25 watt incandescent lamp. If your lamp has a range of up to 250 lumens, you should know that you will only be able to achieve the effect of mood lighting. However, most smart lighting systems have a large light range. With the dimming function you can, if desired, vary between mood lighting and a well-lit room.
Fitting
There is smart lighting for almost every fitting . The most common E19 socket is the standard light bulb socket from the past. E19 refers to the diameter of the screw thread: 27 millimeters. For this fitting you will find smart lamps in both shades of white and color shades.
The E14 fitting is the smaller brother of the E19 and has a smaller diameter of 14 millimeters. Bulbs with an E14 fitting are usually used in smaller lighting fixtures.
In recent years, however, the GU10 fitting is rapidly gaining popularity, partly due to the rise of smart LED lamps. This fitting, also known as a bayonet fitting, has a space of exactly 10 millimeters between the two pins. This fitting is mainly used in spots, where you can easily click them into place with a twist.
Always pay attention to the smart lamps. After all, it can differ from brand to brand and it can be important for the fixture in which the lamp has to fit. Finally, light strips have no fitting. Countless minuscule LED lights together form the light source.
Color Temperature
Color temperature is indicated in Kelvin. The color temperature of a classic incandescent lamp corresponds to about 2700 K. Usually light with a lower color temperature feels warmer than light with a higher color temperature.
With most types of smart lighting, you can play with the color temperature and the associated atmosphere. The maximum color temperature in smart lighting is usually around 6500 K, which corresponds to a cold, white light.
We recommend that you do not mix lamps from different brands. Because each brand has its own shades, there could be a difference in color temperature. If you choose lamps from the same brand, you choose continuity and a uniform appearance.
Connectivity
Most brands of smart lighting can be linked to your Smart Home platform. To achieve this, you usually need a bridge or hub for bridging between your Smart Home platform and your WiFi network.
With some systems of smart lighting, it is also possible without a bridge, for example via Bluetooth. In that case, you are only limited by the distance between your device and the lighting. You connect some smart lighting directly to your WiFi network.
Is your smart lighting connected once? Then you can easily operate and dim them via an app on your smartphone or tablet . You can also link your system with other Smart Home applications such as motion sensors or a wireless alarm system .
That way you program your system to turn on the lighting when motion is detected. You can later expand your configuration with additional lighting elements.
What is smart lighting?
You can control and dim smart lighting with a smartphone or tablet. You can dim the light, change color or turn off the lighting from your lazy chair. You can purchase smart lamps separately or you can opt for a complete starter kit that contains everything you need.
Because you dim and operate the lighting digitally, you hardly use any electricity. You can therefore purchase a lot of smart lighting with eco vouchers .
The best thing about smart lighting is that you get a lot of nice extras. With geofencing , for example, you set parameters around your house so that your Smart Home system knows when you are nearby. When you get home, the light is already switched on.
You can also set time schedules and timers or create scenarios for different situations. You can even let your smart lighting function as an alarm clock so that you wake up pleasantly. And your smart outdoor lighting can be programmed to gradually give more light at sunset.
Benefits of smart lighting
MOOD LIGHTING
You choose the color of your house. You can make adjustments at any time via your smartphone. Bright light to wake up, blue or warm colors at bedtime.
If you have a party, you can also adjust it to change the atmosphere of the house. If you link them to the music, you can theoretically turn your house into a light show.
SMART LIGHTING
Turn lights on and off remotely. It may look like an unnecessary extra, but it does provide some benefits. Lights on as soon as you get home and the smartphone connects to your WiFi.
Just turn the lights on and off when you’re far away, on vacation, to scare off potential thieves, … It doesn’t seem like much, but in the end it is a nice advantage.
ENERGY EFFICIENT
The ability to dim lights is in itself an energy-efficient option. If you can always be sure that there are no unnecessary lights on, then you are sure to save costs.
If you work with smart motion sensors, you can also ensure that the lights are only on when someone is present. It can also be done via a timer, from 10 pm all lights off!
